Mayor Ralph Becker: A Source of Inspiration
“I wish that everyone would feel welcome and included and safe. I wish they would feel secure and optimistic about the future of our community.”
“One thing that I have learned, that I did not anticipate going into public service, is that people look to their elected officials for inspiration. Just being there and showing support is of value. I have come to appreciate that.”
The great responsibility of leadership
As a leader (whether you are in public service, executive level management or even a parent), accepting the fact that people look up to you is critical. Any time you are in the spotlight you have the opportunity to inspire others and influence their behavior…That is a great responsibility!
Your actions, your words, your beliefs, the example you set…all will be noticed. The nature of your position gives you the power to influence for good or bad. Your actions reveal a great deal about who you are. Will you use your influence to inspire? to encourage? or Will you use your influence for selfish reasons? Whatever type of leader you choose to become will have a lasting impact on every person that feels the effects of your influence.
Mayor Becker understands this. His is a highly visible position and there is an expectation among the citizens that the mayor will be involved. Though he is an extremely active participant in the community, he explains, “I wish I had a more outgoing kind of a character…I enjoy participating with folks and showing support where there are good things happening. “
Creating emotional, spiritual and physical stability
Mayor Becker’s emotional strength is impressive. When things get heated or tense, and where others may become flustered, he uses this intensity to create in himself a more focused attention on the job at hand. Pressing forward in trying circumstances is one of the enjoyable and satisfying parts of his job. The mayor’s ability to remain calm and professional in any situation allows him to be a source of inspiration for others to look to.
“I get my greatest sense of spiritual renewal when I am in the outdoors, particularly in these beautiful landscapes that we have around us. Whenever I can get out, whether it’s for a few hours or a few days…it would be nice if it could be a few weeks, it has a powerful effect on my persona, my attitude and my approach with the way I do things at work.”
In our day of constant distractions and instant gratification taking a breath of fresh air can have a powerful renewing effect. Notice the beauty of nature around you. Take a few minutes to look up at the stars at night and take it all in. Put down your smart phone for a minute and look someone in the eyes and feel the burst of energy and strength that comes when you take notice of the beauties around you.
Staying emotionally and spiritually fit is linked to physical fitness as well. In addition to riding his bike to work, Mayor Becker has a morning ritual that he likes to stick to. “I spend 40 minutes each morning going through an exercise routine gets me focused and centered.”
Books that inspire
These books have been an inspiration to Mayor Becker:
Beyond the Hundredth Meridian by Wallace Stegner
Stegner’s book follows the life of John Wesley Powell an explorer of the American West. The book focuses on the Western States with an incredible historical context.
Tao Te Ching by Laozi
Mayor Becker reads this book every year! Tao Te Ching is a book that is a fundamental part of Taoism.
The Lorax by Dr. Seuss
I was not surprised when the mayor recommended this book. He sets the example to follow when it comes to living in harmony with the environment.
